We as a world are more aware than ever of the importance of physical fitness to our overall health. While we remain aware of the need for physical activity far too many of us find far too few reasons to incorporate physical activity into our daily lives and routines. There are many reasons that we procrastinate in this particular effort. For some time is the defining factor while others will readily admit that they have no appreciation whatsoever for those activities that come to mind when exercise is considered.

Whatever your reason for not incorporating exercise and physical activity into your daily routine, have you considered dancing for your health? There are all kinds of wonderful reasons to dance though I can think of very few that would be better than dancing for the sake of your health and physical well being. The good news when it comes to dancing is that in most instances it doesn’t feel as though you are getting exercise and the burning of calories doesn’t sting nearly as much when you’re having fun burning them.

Dancing has evolved a great deal and while the history of dance is a long and noble history. Even, one might add, a quite manly history for those men who haven’t considered dancing in the past.

Benefits of Dancing

In addition to burning calories, a good thing for dieters everywhere, dancing also helps strengthen your muscles and bones. It can provide either a low impact or high impact workout according to your wishes and the music you select, it can be entertaining and feel like fun rather than a chore-this means you are more likely to actually do it than many other exercise programs, and it can help tone all areas of your body rather than focusing on one particular area as many exercises do.

Dancing also provides an excellent opportunity to socialize and meet others if you take classes while in the process helping you gain a better sense of balance and grace (those like me who have absolutely no sense of grace could greatly benefit from this alone). Dancing, and the physical activity alone can help you ward off potential illnesses that are often associated with excess weight and too little physical activity. Even as little as thirty minutes of dance 4 days a week can bring about profound results when it comes to your overall health and well being.

More importantly however than any of these benefits of dancing mentioned above dancing is fun. This means that you will enjoy life a little, laugh a little, and accidentally work a little physical fitness into your life without feeling as though you are suffering for the sake of doing so. So many people get very little physical activity because they do not see physical activity as fun.

If you are wondering what sort of dance is right for you, there are many from which to choose. Square dancing is great fun for couples as are ballroom and swing dancing. Line dancing, contra square dancing, clogging, and tap dancing can be great fun in larger groups or as a participant in a class. If you want something a little sexier for your dance efforts you can always try Salsa dancing, Flamenco dancing, or belly dancing.

If you live in or around a relatively large community it is quite likely that you can find classes or teachers for private lessons for each of these forms of dance quite easily. You do want to make sure that anyone you take lessons from knows what they are doing. You can also look in your local paper for square dancing groups or bars or clubs that offer line dancing classes on designated nights during the week.

Whether you have been dancing all your life or are a rank novice when it comes to dancing, this is a great way to bring physical fitness into your life and improving your health without feeling as though you are really working for it or experiencing a sense of dread at the very thought.

An Introduction to File Extensions
In an effort to be “user-friendly,” Windows (and perhaps some other operating systems) hides the most important part of a file name from new computer users: the extension. Okay – we’re assuming that the reasoning behind hiding extensions is a “user-friendly” one because we just can’t come up with any other reason for hiding them. No harm could ever come from seeing an extension, but plenty could be learned from it. Fortunately you have this article to guide you through some of the most common extensions that you’ll run into.

But before you can see file extensions, you need to turn them on. From Windows Explorer, click on the “Tools” menu, and select “File Options.” Click the “View” tab and then uncheck the box next to “Hide file extensions for known file types.” Click “OK” and you’ll notice that the files in Windows Explorer show a dot and group of three letters after their names. That dot and group of three letters is known as an “extension,” and the extension explains what kind of file it is.

A file could be a plain text file, an image, a sound, a video, or program. But without seeing the extension, you wouldn’t know it unless you double-clicked on it. The following list defines some of the most common extensions that you’ll find on your computer.

.au – This extension indicates a sound file. Most sound players will load up and play this kind of file.

.art – This extension indicates an image file that was compressed with AOL (America Online) technology. Both Internet Explorer and the AOL service software can display this kind of file, however if you don’t have AOL installed on your system, Internet Explorer will display it.

.avi – This extension indicates a video file playable by most multimedia viewers including Microsoft’s Media Player.

.bmp – This extension indicates another image file that might have originated from Windows Paint program.

.dll – This extension indicates a Dynamic Link Library which may contain additional programming code for software. Many different programs often share Dynamic Link Libraries and you’ll find a bunch of them in the Windows/System directory (but don’t ever delete them)!

.exe – This extension indicates a program or an application like Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, or Outlook Express. Use extreme caution when downloading .exe files from the Internet since malicious programmers like to hide viruses in these types of files.

.gif – This extension indicates another image file and it stands for “Graphics Interchange Format.” .Gif files are often smaller than .bmp files (described earlier) and they’re commonly found on Internet web pages.

.jpg – This extension indicates yet another image file and it stands for “Joint Photographers Experts Group.” Like the .gif file, it’s commonly found on Internet web pages, however it’s much smaller than both the .gif image and the .bmp image.

.mid – This extension indicates a sound file created with a Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Windows Media Player will open and run these files, however they don’t sound like normal .wav or .mp3 files (described later). .Mid files are designed to product synthetic sounds using a computer’s sound card.

.mp3 – This extension indicates a sound file that authentically reproduces voice and/or music. Windows Media Player will open and run this kind of file.

.scr – This extension indicates a screen saver file.

.sit – This extension indicates a Macintosh archive StuffIt file. They will not open on a Windows system without a special utility.

.ttf – This extension indicates a font especially designed for use on a Windows system. It stands for “True Type Font.”

.txt – This extension indicates a plain text file that can be opened with Notepad.

.wav – This extension indicates a sound file that like the .mp3 file, can be opened with Windows Media Player or Windows Sound Recorder. .Wav files are much larger than .mp3 files.

.zip – This extension indicates a Windows archive WinZip file. They will not open on a Macintosh system without a special utility software.

Save the individual purchases of these components for those who have more experience.

2. Decide what you’ll use the computer for. If you want to use your computer for cruising the web, sending email, or performing simple word-processing or spreadsheet tasks, a computer with the basic components that we just described should suffice. If you want to use a computer to help with a career in multimedia however, you’re going to need to accessorize your system with a scanner, printer, digital camera, tablet, or digicam for example. If you want a computer to help with a career in music, you will need a quality microphone and set of speakers.

3. Create a budget and stick to it. How much can you afford to spend on a new computer? Although the prices of computers are decreasing, they can still create a hefty expense especially if you need additional peripherals described above. In addition, you’ll need to figure in costs for maintenance, servicing, and insuring.

4. Start comparison shopping and look for the “fastest and biggest.” By “fastest and biggest,” we mean the computer with the fastest processor, the fastest modem, the biggest memory, and the biggest hard drive capacity. Even if you think that you’ll never need the amount of speed or space available on the market today, it’s important to have in the event that you truly do need that much in the future. Having such a large reserve will cut down on costs when the time comes to upgrade for more than what you may settle for in a computer that offers less.

5. Stick with the better-known brands. Venturing off the beaten path with lessor-known brands is again, an adventure for those who have more experience with computers. Although those better-known brands may be a tad bit more expensive, the computer novice will appreciate the comfort in purchasing a computer from a business that has a long record of building quality products, and that has the funds available for fulfilling returns, trades, servicing, and warranties.

6. Select a store. Having an idea of what you want in a computer and what kind of computer that you want, your only task left is to select the place in which you want to buy it. There are a number of places available including computer store outlets, online stores, auction sites, used computer stores, or your friendly neighborhood yard sale. For the computer novice, we recommend buying a computer from a physical store. In a physical store, you have the opportunity to see the computer of interest in person and ask questions. New computer buyers also have access to store warranties, returns, trades, and services.

These suggestions should give the computer newbie a great start in selecting a quality computer for the first time and they apply to either Windows computers or Apple Macintosh computers. After making these decisions and finally selecting one that fits your needs, you can then venture into the fascinating world of software – a world that is just as grand as the world of hardware!

The purposes of food are to promote growth, to supply force and heat, and to furnish material to repair the waste which is constantly taking place in the body. Every breath, every thought, every motion, wears out some portion of the delicate and wonderful house in which we live. Various vital processes remove these worn and useless particles; and to keep the body in health, their loss must be made good by constantly renewed supplies of material properly adapted to replenish the worn and impaired tissues. This renovating material must be supplied through the medium of food and drink, and the best food is that by which the desired end may be most readily and perfectly attained. The great diversity in character of the several tissues of the body, makes it necessary that food should contain a variety of elements, in order that each part may be properly nourished and replenished.

The food elements

The various elements found in food are the following: Starch, sugar, fats, albumen, mineral substances, indigestible substances.

The digestible food elements are often grouped, according to their chemical composition, into three classes; vis., carbonaceous, nitrogenous, and inorganic. The carbonaceous class includes starch, sugar, and fats; the nitrogenous, all albuminous elements; and the inorganic comprises the mineral elements.

Starch is only found in vegetable foods; all grains, most vegetables, and some fruits, contain starch in abundance. Several kinds of sugar are made in nature’s laboratory; cane, grape, fruit, and milk sugar. The first is obtained from the sugar-cane, the sap of maple trees, and from the beet root. Grape and fruit sugars are found in most fruits and in honey. Milk sugar is one of the constituents of milk. Glucose, an artificial sugar resembling grape sugar, is now largely manufactured by subjecting the starch of corn or potatoes to a chemical process; but it lacks the sweetness of natural sugars, and is by no means a proper substitute for them. Albumen is found in its purest, uncombined state in the white of an egg, which is almost wholly composed of albumen. It exists, combined with other food elements, in many other foods, both animal and vegetable. It is found abundant in oatmeal, and to some extent in the other grains, and in the juices of vegetables. All natural foods contain elements which in many respects resemble albumen, and are so closely allied to it that for convenience they are usually classified under the general name of “albumen.” The chief of these is gluten, which is found in wheat, rye, and barley. Casein, found in peas, beans, and milk, and the fibrin of flesh, are elements of this class.

Fats are found in both animal and vegetable foods. Of animal fats, butter and suet are common examples. In vegetable form, fat is abundant in nuts, peas, beans, in various of the grains, and in a few fruits, as the olive. As furnished by nature in nuts, legumes, grains, fruits, and milk, this element is always found in a state of fine subdivision, which condition is the one best adapted to its digestion. As most commonly used, in the form of free fats, as butter, lard, etc., it is not only difficult of digestion itself, but often interferes with the digestion of the other food elements which are mixed with it. It was doubtless never intended that fats should be so modified from their natural condition and separated from other food elements as to be used as a separate article of food. The same may be said of the other carbonaceous elements, sugar and starch, neither of which, when used alone, is capable of sustaining life, although when combined in a proper and natural manner with other food elements, they perform a most important part in the nutrition of the body. Most foods contain a percentage of the mineral elements. Grains and milk furnish these elements in abundance. The cellulose, or woody tissue, of vegetables, and the bran of wheat, are examples of indigestible elements, which although they cannot be converted into blood in tissue, serve an important purpose by giving bulk to the food.

With the exception of gluten, none of the food elements, when used alone, are capable of supporting life. A true food substance contains some of all the food elements, the amount of each varying in different foods.

Uses of the food elements

Concerning the purpose which these different elements serve, it has been demonstrated by the experiments of eminent physiologists that the carbonaceous elements, which in general comprise the greater bulk of the food, serve three purposes in the body;

1. They furnish material for the production of heat;

2. They are a source of force when taken in connection with other food elements;

3. They replenish the fatty tissues of the body. Of the carbonaceous elements, starch, sugar, and fats, fats produce the greatest amount of heat in proportion to quantity; that is, more heat is developed from a pound of fat than from an equal weight of sugar or starch; but this apparent advantage is more than counterbalanced by the fact that fats are much more difficult of digestion than are the other carbonaceous elements, and if relied upon to furnish adequate material for bodily heat, would be productive of much mischief in overtaxing and producing disease of the digestive organs. The fact that nature has made a much more ample provision of starch and sugars than of fats in man’s natural diet, would seem to indicate that they were intended to be the chief source of carbonaceous food; nevertheless, fats, when taken in such proportion as nature supplies them, are necessary and important food elements.

The nitrogenous food elements especially nourish the brain, nerves, muscles, and all the more highly vitalized and active tissues of the body, and also serve as a stimulus to tissue change. Hence it may be said that a food deficient in these elements is a particularly poor food.

The inorganic elements, chief of which are the phosphates, in the carbonates of potash, soda, and lime, aid in furnishing the requisite building material for bones and nerves.

Proper combinations of foods

While it is important that our food should contain some of all the various food elements, experiments upon both animals and human beings show it is necessary that these elements, especially the nitrogenous and carbonaceous, be used in certain definite proportions, as the system is only able to appropriate a certain amount of each; and all excess, especially of nitrogenous elements, is not only useless, but even injurious, since to rid the system of the surplus imposes an additional task upon the digestive and excretory organs. The relative proportion of these elements necessary to constitute a food which perfectly meets the requirements of the system, is six of carbonaceous to one of nitrogenous. Scientists have devoted much careful study and experimentation to the determination of the quantities of each of the food elements required for the daily nourishment of individuals under the varying conditions of life, and it has come to be commonly accepted that of the nitrogenous material which should constitute one sixth of the nutrients taken, about three ounces is all that can be made use of in twenty-four hours, by a healthy adult of average weight, doing a moderate amount of work. Many articles of food are, however, deficient in one or the other of these elements, and need to be supplemented by other articles containing the deficient element in superabundance, since to employ a dietary in which any one of the nutritive elements is lacking, although in bulk it may be all the digestive organs can manage, is really starvation, and will in time occasion serious results.

It is thus apparent that much care should be exercised in the selection and combination of food materials. Such knowledge is of first importance in the education of cooks and housekeepers, since to them falls the selection of the food for the daily needs of the household; and they should not only understand what foods are best suited to supply these needs, but how to combine them in accordance with physiological laws.

The most important factor about fast reading is that you should be clear in your objective and you should have knowledge on what information you are looking for in a text, books or documents before you start reading them. Let us consider the following situation:
Example: If you want only an outline of the total issue discussed in a text then you need to skim the document and only extract the essential facts out of it. If you want to get the detail in your mind then you read it slowly enough to catch the meaning by going through the important part and leaving out irrelevant details.

What is the reading ability of a common man?
The reading ability of a common man is not more than 130 words per minute. This is because most of us read word by word and silently pronounce these words. This is called Sub Vocalization. But if you want to increase up your reading ability you will have to give up this habit of Sub Vocalization.

First of all you should stop reading word by word and then pronouncing them silently. To enhance your reading skills instead of reading word by word look at group of words and then try to take out meaning from it. It is not so easy but if you continue to practice this art you will master it in one day. And then you will be capable to read a block of words and not any individual word and if the meaning of any previous block is not clear to you then you can move to previous block again.

In case of skilled readers they become habitual of reading block and many words in a block. Also the probability of repeating is least in case of skilled readers. Skilled readers also require only a fraction of second to go through a block.

Thus main guidelines to improve your reading skills are:
1) You should concentrate on block of words rather than single word and then try to cover many words in a block.
2) You should minimize the time spend in each block.
3) You should reduce frequency of moving your eyes backwards to cover the previous block.

Have you ever considered winning the first prize of a poem contest?
Even if you are not a poet yourself, writing a nice poem that talks about anything you enjoy, isn’t such a difficult job as you probably think at the time. You see, writing a poem doesn’t come with a manual or guide. Writing a poem comes straight up from the heart.
Sit down, grab a pencil and a piece of white paper and do some thinking. What is it you think right now? What is your major problem? What is the world’s you live in major problem? If you don’t feel inspired at the time, do not push yourself. It’s the worst thing you can do. Be relaxed at the time of writing is very important.

Before you even get started writing, and why not winning the contest with your poem, allow me to introduce you to some technical terms used in poetry. Have you ever saw a sonnet before or heard haiku? No, I am not speaking Greek. These are popular forms of poetry, created centuries ago.

Poetry consists of two basic keys. Rhythm and meter. Concerning the rhythm, I don’t think there is much to say here. Rhythm is everywhere all around us. At the train station, at school, at the office, even inside our body. Our heart is an unstoppable drummer… Meter is the recurring pattern of the rhythm and it differs from poem to poem.

There are also different writing styles and figures of speech. Metaphors, allegories, parallelisms and resemblances are used more often. I will give you an example in order to understand it better.

“Your muscles are hard as a rock”     →   This is a resemblance.

“It’s raining cats and dogs”               →    This is a metaphor.

I think you get the point.

Lastly, I will try to give you some general steps in order to help you organizing your thoughts and start writing your poems.

Step One

As mentioned above, try to relax… Take it easy… No one is hunting you down… Before sitting down and give it a shot, having a warm bath, listening to your favourite songs  in your MP3 player or anything else that makes you feel more relaxed, is always a good idea and will help you concentrate.

Step Two

Take the piece of paper in front of you and begin writing anything. Yes ANYTHING! Remember that when you end writing this poem, you will consider this as your child. Take your heart out. Don’t try at first to find the exact words to rhyme. It’s not the lyrics of a song you are writing to definitely need a rhyme. And do the edits afterwards if needed.

Step Three

It’s all about beauty… Bring back the happy memories from your life so far… Bring even some bad memories… Consider that you are a painter. Bring back the memory when you were a little kid and drew big houses, green forests, snowy mountains… Only this time your brush is your pencil. I repeat, TAKE YOUR HEART OUT. In the poem there is a piece of you.  And everything you have inside your heart can’t be but beautiful.

Step Four

Share your mental work. Getting feedback is always essential. Pass your poem around and ask for your friend’s opinions. Except if you believe that it is something too personal that even your best friend or your sister is not allowed to read it. It’s up to you really. But usually showing your best friend your poem and reading it out loud, helps you a lot. Makes you a better writer. Makes you love poetry even more than now. Can you imagine if none of the known poets never published their works? The whole world would be emptier and mentally poor.

Remember this: You can do anything. You can write about anything you like. If you get stuck and have no ideas to start working, take a walk to the park. Look at the people around you. Observe them. Look them straight in the eyes. The eyes never lie. This can be very inspirational and motivating. When you see all the unfair things happening in front of you, when you see poverty, when you see small children crying, take your brush out. And paint…Whatever comes straight from the heart can’t be but beautiful.

Be careful how you write
Emails that are too familiar are not appreciated by everyone, and “john doe” emails are not appreciated at all. If you are not addressing a person you know, don’t use short phrases. you shouldn’t use the quite emoticons either, that might seem too forward. Then check your text to correct the misspellings. Emails with lots of mistakes don’t look to good and make a bad impression.

Formatting problems
Not all email programs are simple, so keep the simplest format possible. Maybe the recipient cannot see the green font and the flower send by you. Email is for communication, not a design exercise, so keep it simple.

Starting and finishing
Don’t start a message with at least a simple “Hello”. Lots of people jump right to the subject. It doesn’t have to be formal, just something polite. “Dear” or “hi” are very appropriate. At the end “Sincerely” might seem too formal so use “All the best” or “Yours truly”.

Find out as much as you can about the company you intent to work for. Try to document yourself about everything and a thing the job you are competing for can include, the products pr services the company offers. Ask questions. The questions you will ask show that you are proactive and that you want to make sure this place is indeed the right work place for you.

Send a “Thank You” note at no more than 2 days after the interview. Express your interest towards the job you are interested in and thank them for their time. Even if you end up not being interested in the job anymore, you can never know if that person can’t become a great contact person for you.

Love, Jenny.” Another example is: “Dear Mr. & Mrs. … we are having a house-warming party on ….. and we would love to have you too. Yours, Jo & Joe.” In accepting an invitation one example is: “How nice! See you then! Jenny.” Another example is: “So kind of you to invite us too -we will both be delighted to attend. Yours, Eric.” If you are courteous, polite, recipients will mention you favourably when they write letters, will speak well of you in your social circles.

>> Sympathy notes must be written carefully. These are e.g., get-well notes, sometimes on cards; or, to express condolences to someone who is in mourning -when most do not write a letter but a note.

> A get well note or card, whether to a close relative away and you also write a letter, or on its own, is always more appreciated if one adds a personal touch to it. For example, if to a friend and it is not serious, “Don’t take your time about getting well -we haven’t finished our chess game yet…”; if to a friend, and it is serious, “I’ll pray for your speedy recovery.” An example, if it is to someone you hardly know and are sending it as the done-thing in your social or business circles, is: “I will look forward to hearing of your recovery from mutual friends and colleagues.”

>In bereavement cases never try to cheer up in a sympathy note with a joke; however well meant, in one’s grief it may be deemed unfeeling, inappropriate!.. Leave the comforting to the mourner’s loved ones from whom more than a sympathy note is considered appropriate! Be, or appear, sincerely saddened by the loss. Clearly state so: “I am saddened by the news of …’s death.” Say: “I am so sorry to hear of your loss.” Show so by emphasizing it, e.g., “… he/she will be greatly missed.” Unless a loved one writing a letter too, if you don’t attempt to comfort, it will be appreciated.

>> Notes to loved ones matter most. On an anniversary or birthday greeting never be satisfied with what’s on the greeting card. Even if to a loved one away and accompanied by a loving letter, always personalize the card with a few words of your own, e.g., “Miss you!” or “Love you!” or “Take care.”
